Clickbait; How Does It Work?

If you have ever been just browsing the Internet or check out your favorite social media pages, then you have probably already seen clickbait ads. In today’s post, I will share with you what clickbait is and how you can use it to gain more attention to your online content.

What Is Clickbait?

Clickbait are the ads, posts, thumbnails, and pictures designed to gain your attention and interact with it. Often times the ad wants you to click on it and bring you to a related webpage where the page will continue the process of convincing you to keep clicking.

How Can I Use Clickbait?

Clickbait is a popular way of getting attention, and for you to use it, you need to know who you want clicking on your ads. Are you a company setting up advertisements on Facebook to collect emails of potential clients and convincing them to buy your product?

Jumpcut, an online training program, found a way to get more people to read their emails and watch their videos. In their test, they sent out emails to two groups of 25,000 people. The emails itself had the same content but with two different subject lines that people would see in their email. The first one being “WARNING: this video will open your eyes to a new world” and the second being “Brand spanking NEW: Underdog to Influencer (Part 1/4)” Out of the two, subject line one managed to get 6,848 people to watch their video vs. subject line two whom only collected 3,982 viewers.

“If you don’t “sell” the click, you’ll never get the chance to impress the viewer with your content in the first place.” -Kong Founder Of Jumpcut

If your a Youtuber or a Twitch Streamer you are trying to compete with millions of other videos and streams for attention. The right title and thumbnail can make all the difference.

In my own experience, my Youtube videos that had funny titles often got higher views. The same can be said for my streams on Twitch. I always try to go for the title and thumbnail that gets an emotional response out of the viewer resulting in a click. Here is an example of a thumbnail I used for my YouTube series, This War Of Mine.

There you have it, my friend. Clickbait is a useful tool once you figure out what titles and pictures make people click on your ads. Then you can get people to take the time to read your sells pitch for your product or to watch your video. I plan on practicing this skill further with my own YouTube channel, BryceIsTubing.
