If I Were President | Week 27

If you want to change the world, then help those who want to help themselves.” – Bryce Ward 11/7/2020

What would I want to accomplish if I were to be elected the next President of the United States? There are so many different issues one could tackle in four years. However, for today I am going to share one topic I would venture as President. Overall my goal is to provide a solid foundation for future generations and give them flexible tools to overcome unforeseen obstacles.

Universal Basic Income

A UBI or Universal Basic Income is a monthly payment from the United States government to every legal citizen over 18. In the United States, groups like Andrew Yang’s movement have been putting forward the idea of $1,000 a month. For most, $1,000 a month would help keep many above the poverty line; however, some groups want a UBI that would support a middle-class lifestyle.

I favor a $1,000 monthly UBI because compared to other welfare programs, it appears to be a more flexible and cost-effective program. For example, there are programs to cover one’s needs for food, water, and shelter; however, they may only cover you if your income is below a specific point. Imagine your benefits cover you up to $1,000, and you earn $1,001. You could end up losing those benefits resulting in you having less money than when you started. Overall a UBI lets people use the money; however, they see fit rather than having an expert choose them.

Thank You!
